The truffle of Crete Senesi

Truffles can be found in all the province of Siena, but the most delicious one comesfrom the Crete Senesi and its harvesting goes on almost all year long.
In the territory of San Giovanni D’Asso there are three main truffle varieties: the white truffle of Crete Senesi, the most famous one, thanks to its unique characteristics, the tartufo marzuolo and the tartufo scorzone.

For all of those who are fascinated by this world, is possible to book one of the different tours to the truffle fields, which are organised by the winery Loghi all year long. The guests will be led inside the property woods by the owner of the winery and his dogs, taking part in a true truffle hunt. Along the way, they will learn how truffles are generated, which are the method of harvesting, the types of commercialisation and how to take care of the environment. Back to the winery, the guests will be welcomed with a tasting of its typical products. The tasting has two options: buffet with tastings of bruschetta and extra virgin olive oil, crostino and truffle, cheeses, salami and three different wines; lunch or dinner including 3 truffle based courses.

Booked truffle fields tours at the winery ‘I Loghi’ usually take place all year long upon request, except on may, for closing period of truffle searching, which is regulated by regional laws.
Meetings usually begin at 10 am or during the afternoon at 5 pm, but it all depends on the season and weather, preferring the coolest hours in summer and the brightest ones in winter.
Our guests will be welcomed inside the company by its owner and truffle finder, Valentino, who will escort them to an enthusiastic tour inside the surrounding woods, looking for the mysterious truffle.
After around one hour and half they will be led to the building where can be tasted products of the winery (wine, extra virgin olive oil, truffles), located just in front of the cellar.
The tasting can be chosen from 2 kinds:
  • Buffet with a tasting menu of various products  (extra virgin olive oil bruschetta, two truffle based crostino, cheeses, cold cuts, two wines)
  • Lunch or dinner menu including 5 truffle based courses: mixed based truffle crostini appetiser, tagliolini and truffle as first course, cold cuts and cheeses chopping board as second course. It’s possibile to add, as enrichment, another truffled based course that can vary from meats, eggs or other pairings for truffle. The truffle that is served is always fresh, so its type is naturally different during the year, depending on the availability of the product, which varies with seasons.
In fact, it exists a specific picking calendar to follow, which is the following:
  • From the 1st of January to the 30th of April: picking period of marzuolo truffle.
  • From the 1st of June to the 9th of September: picking period of scorzone truffle.
  • From the 10th of September to the 31st of December: picking period of Crete Senesi luxury white truffle.
